Our Teachers
Our teachers serve women who cannot attend formal English language classes due to caring of small children, work, transportation, or physical/psychological trauma. This year 50 volunteer teachers supported the program and provided more than 1,600 hours of service to over 60 women.

Teachers are not required to have prior teaching experience. They receive training before starting their work with students and ongoing training after they become teachers. IRWP provides teachers with lesson plans; books; workbooks; evaluation tools; and continuing support from liaison teachers, the curriculum coordinator, and the executive director. In two one-hour sessions a week, teachers provide one-on-one instruction that includes speaking, reading, and writing English. Teacher and Student TogetherTeachers also help their students with real-life situations such as making medical appointments and using public transportation, and they seek opportunities to take them on “field trips” to stores and other places to practice their new skills. Student field trips this year included the Missouri Botanical Garden, Soulard Market, St. Louis Science Center, and Eckert’s Apple Orchard.
